Do you know what makes for a great campaign? It is storytelling! Larry June has arguably been one of the great storytellers of today’s hip-hop. When I think of his scope of influence, I think of Ice Cube, Too Short, & Scarface. To say the least, Larry has established himself as a well-rounded artist that is lyrically skilled with character and charisma we all wish to possess.
His business acumen doesn’t fall short either. In 2019, Larry founded Midnight Organic, a full lifestyle brand that sells not only apparel but home goods, accessories, self-published books, & his latest category: WATCHES !!
On July 24th at 3 p.m. EDT, Larry released his collaboration with G-Shock, and the country was in a frenzy! The watch has been teased some weeks prior when Larry was seen wearing a full orange monochromatic DW6900. The iconic silhouette only meant one thing… A watch was coming soon.
I found myself checking Midnight Organic’s website and his Instagram account to be in the know of this release. Once the date was set, I was determined to acquire this watch. Although I am a huge Larry June fan, I am privileged to say that he is an acquaintance as I’ve sat down with him for an interview when I was a host on a show titled “Wristcheck Pod”. It was an honor to also be featured on his latest album “Who’s Coppin”. A clip of my interview was included in the closing of the intro record “Go Outside”.
That moment was overwhelming, and I felt obligated to own this timepiece. Knowing Larry and his love for watches along with his cultural relevance, this was a true trophy that must be added to the collection of exquisite timepieces I own.
This watch embodies the world Larry creates by giving prominent nods to the things he speaks about in his music… cars, clothes, watches, and fly things. The design inspiration drives from his iconic 1987 Chevrolet C4 Corvette with the orange interior. The gray chromatic exterior of the C4 also has mention in this watch by the hardware and face of the watch.
Larry understands that you can’t buy taste, and a price tag doesn’t dictate what is cool or not. I know many seasoned collectors with 7-figure collections were disappointed when they missed out on this drop. One of the many talents of Larry is his ability to capture his audience and not only get their buy-in but their commitment to getting their credit right, seeking ownership, and standing on your 10 as someone people could look to for leadership.
This watch meant more than just buying. It meant anything is possible, and with a solid plan, you can achieve anything!
